Veteran game developer Warren Spector gave an interesting keynote address at the Penny Arcade Expo today, touching on subjects like “inclusiveness of gaming” and the medium’s expanding audience, and how core gamers should view the broadening landscape as a positive sign of gaming’s widespread acceptance as mainstream entertainment. Spector concluded his talk by playing the second half of the Epic Mickey intro cinematic.

IndieCade, the International Festival of Independent Games, has announced the thirty-two finalists selected for 2010. The IndieCade 2010 festival is open to the public and is taking place from October 8-10 in Culver City, CA. If you’re a Los Angeles local (or within driving distance that weekend), check out the various admission options. The Los Angeles Times called IndieCade the “video game industry’s Sundance,” for a reason, y’know.

So, not too much happened today. Pretty quiet considering PAX 2010 just started. You’d think some news would drop, but not a peep out of the industry.
Oh, except for Duke Nukem Forever coming out of its grave!
Few would argue that, between its other major franchises like Mario and Zelda, Nintendo is extremely comfortable changing the Metroid formula around. In 2002, Retro Studios took the classic series into first-person territory, much to the initial dismay of the franchise’s loyalists. To this day, Metroid: Prime stands as one of the best titles in the franchise.
When Nintendo revealed Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja would take over and, once again, change Samus Aran’s world, I was a little worried. As a huge fan of the franchise, I decided to purposfully avoid the game at every major show, promising to only play the finished product.

[Update: 11:45am] Images from the PAX 2010 show floor have appeared online [via Pikimal] revealing Duke Nukem Forever, branded with 2K and Gearbox logos. Duke Nukem Forever, it is!

Here’s your official confirmation for that thing you already knew to be true: Duke Nuke Forever, lives!
Today at PAX 2010, 2K Games revealed that Duke Nukem Forever is currently in development at Gearbox Software for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
During 2K’s live stream of the reveal, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford stated that Duke Nukem Forever would release in 2011, not 2010 as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
“The approach and investment and process at 3d Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It’s the game it was meant to be,…
Stores on US Army and Air Force bases will no longer be allowed to sell Medal of Honor, Kotaku reports, due to the fact that its multiplayer features a playable Taliban faction.
Retailer GameStop, which has 49 stores located on military bases in the US, was asked by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service to remove the game from sale.
“GameStop has agreed out of respect for our past and present men and women in uniform we will not carry Medal of Honor in any of our AAFES based stores,” an email to GameStop employees, obtained by Kotaku, explains. “As such, GameStop agre…
Earlier this week, we were invited to see the reveal of multiplayer for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, which largely piggybacks off of Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 featureset. Treyarch is changing things up, however, including in-game currency, wagers, bots, and more.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Campaign
After the reveal, it was time to go hands-on with the game in team deathwatch and the four Wager Match modes. First off, the game is crisp and smooth, exactly what you’d expect from Call of Duty. Second, Black Ops seems a lot less hectic than MW2, but it’s too early to tell how…
