Yes, you make a virtual memory card for PS1 and PS2, and then you can save games on them. I’ve used them to save FF VII, FF VIII, FF X, and FF XII, but it works with any PS1/PS2 game. Also keep in mind that the 40GB PS3 doesn’t play PS2 games, though the 80GB PS3 does.
