Well, it all depends on your genre of games.
If you like first person shooter and team based strategy games, theres always the Valve library.
Go to steam.com and download their client, and from there, you can buy such games as Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Darwinia, and many other games like that.

usually, you can buy them at the webpages of the developer or supplier.
for example, on sony.com. They got a division called SOE (sony online entertainment). Some games you can download and pay for them to play them.
There are some gamers pages, which have always the link to the official webpages for a game. Its the best way to go.
try mmorpg. com for online RPG games.
try gamespot.com, or gamershell.com.
Get the little progrramm XFire, there oyu can download demos to try out before buy. There are oter possibilities, too.
I would not buy a game, before a try out. Thanks god, nowadays there are demos for almost everything, and reviews for everything.
