Will the new Playstation 3 play Playstation 2 games?

My son wants a Playstation 3 for Christmas but someone told me that the discs (games) are different than the Playstation 2 games. If that’s so, I won’t even bother…he has over 40 games for the Playstation 2 and I guess I’ll just add to that. What do you think? Would the PS 2 games play on the PS 3?

There is also talk that only certain games will be allowed over, so you could be out of luck

from what i understand the ps3 will not only play ps2 games but will also play ps games….my daughter and husband can not wait for it to come out in novemeber…it is going to have a pretty price tag too though!!!i say it is a great buy for christmas!!!
release date is november 17th for us..price…499-599….

If you go to PlayStation.com you will see that it will play all old PS1 and PS2 games. I am selling my PS2 and i am keeping all my old PS2 games so i can play them on my PS3. There has been some talk that the PS3 may not be able to play a small percentage of old games, like 1-2% of them, but i don’t know if that is true. But it will at worst play 99% of all old PS1 and PS2 games.
