Anyone know of a good, safe & free website to download old PC games?

I have an itch to play some old PC games, like King’s Quest, etc. Does anyone know of a good, safe, and FREE place that I can go to either play or download these type of games? Everywhere I go I have to pay something and I just don’t feel right paying $20 bucks a piece for these!!

Dani, there are several out there, but I recommend at the top of the list. Depending on your definition of “old”, they have just about every 80’s game that there was for easy, free and safe play online (although these are mostly of the popular arcade variety, i.e. Centipede, Defender, Dig Dug, etc., as opposed to strictly PC games) and the option to download…again, freely and safely…some of the games on there. Watch for any weird links that might try to direct you to another game site, though (not the host site’s fault) but it’s the best site for nostalgic and safe gameplay that I can think of off the top of my head. Enjoy!!!

for old stuff, if you want to get it free it needs to have been “abandoned.” One of the best places to get “abandonware” is “abandonia” it is. There are links on it to other abandonware sites, including the “abandonware ring” that lists a bunch of them, in case abandonia hasn’t got what you want. I got for instance, Warcraft 1, and EA’s SU-25 Stormovik air combat sim at abandonia. There’s lots of popular stuff from the 80’s and 90’s.
You can also get a lot of old stuff from the Linux Game Tome. True to the spirit of linux everything there is GPL, meaning free to use, though still copyrighted so you can’t modify it. Most everything there has windows versions though, not just linux. A lot of it is newer stuff, including the latest versions of advanced games like Open Arena (Quake 3/4) and Legends, but there is a lot of older stuff too. You can get Doom there, for instance (the maps and stuff you have to get from sites you can find with links) And I think Duke Nukem too, though that may just be a port. A lot of stuff, there’s over a 1000 titles almost all commercially free.

Your nearly out of luck on this one, considering that most PC games are never quite defunct, but to satisfy your crave for classic gaming, I would download an emulator. Personally, i prefer classic Sega Genesis games, so i got the Genesis emulator Fusion351. It allows you to play any Genesis, GameGear, SegaCD, or MasterSystem rom you can download. (a rom is the data copied from the game cartridge of a certain game). You will need to download several files to get it though, and I will include the sites for them in the sources. First, download the actual emulator and extract the Fusion application to a place you will remember, such as your desktop. Now, download the rom of the game you want to play. (I chose Rom-world.com because of their large selection and no stupid secret download passwords) save the rom to a place you will remember as well. unzip it, then right-click the rom, and select “run with…”(the option may be called “Open with…” on some machines, or it may not have it at all. if it doesn’t, click Open, and when the dialogue box that says “Windows cannot open this file” select “select program from a list and hit OK to get to the “open with” screen) when the dialogue box appears, click browse and browse to Fusion351 and click it. Now, when it returns to the original dialogue box, click fusion351. The rom should now play.
