Here’s the situation: the Playstation 3 is a region free console, for example you can play Japanese games on a US made console, then I have plenty of Playstation 2 games. If I was wondering, can a PS3 run other PS2 games?
I wouldn’t chip it! I’ve been looking into this and these guys say that it can. . I haven’t bought from them yet but am thinking about it as I can get Bluray from Amazon.com when new movies come out and play any PS3 game and play my trusty PS2 games.
yes you can! the 80GB PS3 has a software emulator built-in for you to play old PS2 games, but 80% of the all PS2 games will play on the 80gb PS3. the 20GB and 60GB PS3 has a hardware engine card embedded on its core and can play 98% of all PS2 games. the 40GB PS3 has no support in playing PS2 games. all consoles are blu-ray capable [so no problems in playing blu-ray videos].
The PS3 is a region free console for PS3 games. This does NOT apply to PS2, PS1, DVD, or Blu-ray Discs.
If you own a US PS3, your console will be region encoded to NTSC-U/C, and will only be able to play NTSC-U/C region PS2 games (and PS1, for that matter). This means you will NOT be able to play Europe (PAL) or Japan (NTSC-J) region coded games, nor will it work in reverse (US PS2 game on Japan PS3).
This means you CAN NOT play imported PS2 games, back-ups, or pirated games at this time.
There is also no simple method of chipping/disc swapping for the PS3. Supposedly some people have successfully been able to use “swap magic” type approaches, but not without thoroughly dissecting their PS3. There are also no proven third party providers of mod chip/swap techniques that to achieve what you are looking for (I would not encourage you to pursue this line of PS3 modding either).
The same principle applies to all DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and PS1 games. They will not run on your PS3 unless they are for the appropriate region to your particular PS3.
If is region free and backwards compatible. Depends which version you have. However, the unit isnt necessarily “region free” for everything as you may think. There are modifications you can do to accomplish this, but they arent something that can be listed here.

No. While PS3 games are region free, the PS2 games aren’t.
So there is currently no way to get foreign PS2 games to run on a PS3.
