Are european Nintendo Wii games compatible with a US Nintendo Wii console (and vice versa)?

No, because European TVs run on the “PAL” standard (Phase Alternation by Line, I believe) whereas North American TVs run on the NTSC standard (not sure what that stands for). In other words, the displays are generated differently, thus meaning European Wii games won’t display properly on US screens. Also, regional software lockouts would prevent playing European games on US Wiis and vice versa.
