How do pc games look hooked up to a 720p HDTV versus a console?

Basically, if I played COD4 on a PC on a 720p hdtv at 720p, would I be able to tell it apart from COD4 played on a PS3 on the same tv and same resolution?

depending on you computer it might actually look a tad better considering it might have better graphics card/processor etc than what the ps3 has. so therefore even if its at the same resolution it will end up looking better. also most 720p tvs are like 1366 x 768 or w/e which is slightly better than 720p and u can set up w/e res u want on ur computer - just need dvi to hdmi cord or dvi to dvi or w/e ur graphics card to the input of the tv

PC games have an Achilles heel in development, that is they have to be compatible with the lowest common denominator of machine that will run them, meaning they can’t make the most of the best pc hardware or they won’t sell enough. They can make settings for some things, but that’s not the same thing as concentrating on one single thing like you can do on consoles. So you may be able to get a few settings better if you’ve got an Nvidia 8800gtx, but not enough to make much difference. Also the consoles do a very good job of just making 720p video look plain good, rich, colorful and vibrant, if your pc has only a vga connection it won’t begin to compare.
If you want games built to use the 8000-and 9000- series Nvidias, get the pc exclusives. The rest are too multiplatform to get much difference.
The ps3’s RSX is no slouch, and since a lot of ps3 games are starting to go full HD it’s a high bar for pc games to jump over. They can do it, but it takes development money which is kind of scarce in pc games lately.
