Ferrari splitting ex-Gizmondo exec Stefan Eriksson’s tale optioned for a movie

At last, former Gizmondo head honcho Bo Stefan Eriksson’s story is finally going to be told on film — or rather, the one told in Wired will be. Writer-director Craig Zobel and producer Beau Flynn have optioned the rights to create a movie based on the publication’s October 2006 article “Gizmondo’s Spectacular Crack-up” by Randall Sullivan, which chronicles the build up to his infamous car crash. Flynn’s production company Contrafilm will be backing the project, and should the movie actually make it to theaters and be successful, we suspect there’ll be plenty of material for a sequel.

Atari Emulation of CRT Effects On LCDs

An anonymous reader writes “A group at Georgia Institute of Technology has developed a fun little open source program to emulate the CRT effects to make old Atari games look like they originally did when played on modern LCD’s and digital displays. Things like color bleed, ghosting, noise, etc. are reproduced to give a more realistic appearance.”

New Fable II DLC Coming May 12th

Lionhead Studios today announced that their next section of downloadable content for Fable II, called See the Future, will be available on May 12th. The new content will include new quests, monsters and items, a Colosseum, and alter egos for the player’s dog. Peter Molyneux also hinted at a connection to the next Fable game, saying, “… it would be pretty poor to say See the Future if it didn’t have some connection.” Further details are available in the latest in Lionhead’s series of developer diaries.

Can Avatars Make Contracts?

edadams sends in a story about the legal questions that are starting to crop up over property disputes in virtual worlds. A lawsuit in March 2008 that stopped one Second Life user from selling a virtual product created by another user marked the beginning of a significant amount of casework for several law firms, in large part due to the way Second Life’s currency interacts closely with real money. (And yes, apparently the product in that particular case was for cybersex — did you have to ask?) “As transactions grow in volume, it’s inevitable that disagreements will crop up. Linden says that although it will enforce its terms of service, including its ban on violating other users’ intellectual property, it can’t settle most disputes for users.” A lawyer for one intellectual property firm handled a case in which the co-ownership of virtual real estate had to be determined, ending with a financial settlement given to two users who helped a virtual land developer run a group of Second Life islands. As virtual worlds get more popular and their business models more directly affect real-life finances, we can expect these legal issues to become more common as well.

NES gamepad mouse is the most amazing piece of industrial design in the history of humankind

Apparently as of right now, this stunning piece of high art is just a foam model mock-up, but listen to us, mouse manufacturers of the world: if you build this, we will give you every penny we have to own it. Our only gripe? The D-pad should definitely be up top for navigation duties. Still… where’s the waiting list?

Console Port of The Witcher On Hold

Several sources are reporting that work on The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, a console port of the popular PC game, has officially been suspended. CD Projekt, makers of the original game, were working with WideScreen Games on the new version. WideScreen says that CD Projekt missed a significant payment for their role in the development, leading them to stop work on the game. They are emphatic that development won’t continue until CD Projekt makes good on the debt, but CD Projekt says, “All payments were done on time according to milestone plan. … Truth is that payments were later than originally planned but this was solely due to delays in production. The delays were growing in the project due to WSG [continuing] to miss the deadlines.” The game’s future is uncertain.
