tlhIngan writes “Despite all the lawsuits and injunctions by Sony to keep the PS3 Jailbreak out of modder’s hands, it appears that a third party has made a clone. The best part is, it only requires a cheap (approximately $40) development board by Atmel, and the requisite software is open-source. Get the Atmel code from GitHub and apply a small patch which will enable backup play (the code by itself only lets you run unsigned code, the patch allows for BD backups). The code is GPLv3. It would be highly ironic if someone ported this to Linux USB Gadgets, then you could use a Linux device to jailbreak your PS3, to which Sony removed Linux functionality. An Android phone would be suitable.”

In the 70s and 80s, though, companies tried to grab a consumer’s attention with fancy artwork that bore no resemblance to the actual game. Atari, in particular, was one of the biggest offenders, particularly with its 2600 console.”

dkd903 writes “A rumor has been going around for about four months that Valve was working on a Linux version of Steam and this had a lot of people in the Linux community very excited. But, Valve has now officially killed the rumor. And it is not what people wants to hear – there is no Linux version of Steam in development. Doug Lombardi, the Marketing VP of Valve Corporation, in an interview, has put an end to all the rumors by saying that they are not working on Steam for Linux right now.”

dlove67 writes “PSX-scene.com reports that the first PS3 modchip has been tested and confirmed to be working. Running off of a USB dongle, it appears to be relatively user friendly and claims to not void your warranty. Online gameplay works (at least for the time being). It’s been a long time coming; cheers to the PS Jailbreak Guys.” The video is attached below if you’re curious. Can’t help but point out that this wouldn’t have happened if Sony hadn’t decided to yank the Boot Other OS option.

hasanabbas1987 writes “A group of engineers going by Waterloo Labs in Austin, Texas created a way of controlling an original NES by simply moving your eyes. By using electrodes placed around the eyes to track the movement of a players eyeballs, they were able to jury rig a Nintendo to accept eye movement as controller input.” Quite the production on the video (attached below) too.

Legendary geeks such as Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, and Andy Herzfeld have tried their hands at writing them. And yet they get no respect — or, actually, attention of any kind. Technologizer’s Benj Edwards aimed to rectify that with a look at forty years’ worth of bundled OS games, from 1971 Unix text-based ones to Woz’s Little Brick Out to such Windows mainstays as Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Reversi.” Article is an annoyingly long slide show (would it kill people to put a reasonable amount of content on pages?) but there’s some fun stuff in there.

An anonymous reader writes “One of the more curious trends emerging from last week’s StarCraft II launch is people alleging that the game kills graphics cards.The between-mission scenes onboard Jim Raynor’s ship aren’t framerate capped. These are fairly static scenes, and don’t take much work for the graphics card to display them. Because of this, the card renders the scene as quickly as possible, which then taxes your graphics card as it works to its full potential. As the pipelines within your graphics card work overtime, the card will heat up and if it can’t cope with that heat it will crash.”
