Sony hacks 15 percent from PSP’s price in Japan

While Sony seemed more than willing to show off its new PSP Go Converter and even more willing to gloat about its one millionth PS3 Slim sale, this little tidbit was pushed away in some neglected corner of the Tokyo Game Show. Thankfully for you, we’re dedicated to leaving no stone unturned, and now we’ve discovered that the outfit is fixing to cut 15 percent from the PSP-3000’s price tag… but only in Japan. Starting on October 1st, the UMD-friendly handheld will be offered in The Land of the Rising Sun for ¥16,800, or just over $185 using current conversion tables. So Sony — any plans to hook the rest of the world up? You don’t want to see us pout.

Audiovox integrates PlayStation 2 into rear-seat entertainment system

Tired of strapping muzzles on your youngsters whenever you have to make that eight hour trek to grandma’s pad? So were a couple of engineers at Audiovox. The VOD10PS2 claims to be the planet’s first fully integrated gaming system made for the car, with the overhead system not only packing a 10.2-inch display, but an honest-to-goodness PlayStation 2 console as well. Just so we’re clear — the $949.99 asking price nets you the box itself, a screen, a PS2, two wireless controllers, a built-in dome light, a pair of fold-flat IR wireless headphones and a copy of Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and Hot Shots Golf 3. Heck, there’s even a remote and FM transmitter, not to mention a pair of trim rings that’ll obviously work with whatever drab interior color you selected for your minivan. So, willing to pay just under a grand to shut the little ones up forever? (Tempting, isn’t it?)

Microsoft kicks out $50 rebate for $299 Xbox 360 Elite

Didn’t Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite just drop to $299, like, three weeks ago? Yes, yes it did. Evidently that cut just wasn’t deep enough for Microsoft (or else it had a change of heart following the release of Sony’s $299 PS3 Slim), as the Redmond mega-corp has today lit up a new mail-in rebate program to bring the cost down to $249. Consoles purchased between today (sorry, Monday shoppers!) and October 5th are eligible, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what’ll happen to the 360 lineup come October 6th. So, is Santa coming early for anyone this year, or what?

[Via Major Nelson, thanks Logan]

Blaze Nintendo DSi game selector improves cart management, uglies up your handheld

Have a habit of losing those DSi carts on the bus, in between the couch cushions or in other darker, more taboo locales? Fret not, as the carefree crew over at Blaze has your best interests in mind. Hailed as the first 3-in-1 game selector for Nintendo’s DSi, this mildly unsightly attachment simply plugs into your game port and then houses a trio of your favorite titles. Once you’ve got it mounted, just flip the switch to change the title, though we’d suggest powering your DSi down before doing so. It’s available now to solve a problem you probably only think you have for £14.99 ($24).

How would you change Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus add-on?

It took the Big N right around a year to actually ship its Wii MotionPlus dongle after first showing it off at E3 2008, and now we’re curious to know if you think the wait was worth it. We’ve already spilled our deepest, darkest thoughts on the $20 add-on accessory, but now that Wii Sports Resort is out (and still firmly lodged within your Wii’s optical drive), we just can’t wait another second to hear from end users. Are you pleased with the additional sensing capabilities? Has it enhanced your gameplay as you thought it would? What aspects would you like to see changed? You just paid a Jackson for a brick that attaches to your perfectly functional Wiimote — don’t miss your chance to pick it apart.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim stand gets pictured… all $24 of it

See that up there? That’s the all-new, not-yet-on-sale PlayStation 3 Slim’s stand. It works by laying flat on whatever surface you deem fit, and then it holds your new gaming console upright. We get the impression that it’ll do its job fairly well, but the $24 retail price is borderline insulting. Or, it’s just the motivation you needed to craft one on your own and prove that you were indeed born with a few DIY genes — it’s all about perspective, folks.

Sony finally hacks $100 from ‘old’ PlayStation 3 price, starting today

After begging, pleading and imploring Sony for months on end to lower the barrier to entry on its PlayStation 3 console, the company has at long last relented. Starting today (supposedly, anyway), all existing PS3 consoles will retail for $100 less than they did yesterday, though it looks as if most e-tailers have yet to ratchet their tags down to reflect the change. Of course, you could wait just a few more days and snag a PS3 Slim for the low, low price of $299, but the question is — will you? Do tell in comments below.

Sony announces ’snackable’ 100MB Minis for PSN Store

Over in beautiful Cologne, Germany, Sony has just confirmed what we’ve suspected for months now. Exclusive to the PSN Store, loyal Sony gamers will soon have access to a new segment of titles, ones that’ll be available anytime and anywhere that there’s an internet connection. The 100MB (or less) selections — which are being officially called Minis — are designed to take advantage of the “smaller development cost on the PSP,” and if all goes well, we’ll see 15 games (such as Tetris, Hero of Sparta, MiniGore and Fieldrunners) launching on October 1st. There’s been no mention yet of how expensive these “snackable” apps / games will be, but we’re holding Sony to its promise of 50 by the end of 2009.

Update: Press release after the break.

Logitech’s $300 G27 racing wheel gives sidelined DUI possessors a taste of the road

Eager to get back on the track, but not so eager to ease up on the sauce? Fret not, our continually inebriated friends, as Logitech has just the answer for your awfully depressing road woes. The long-awaited successor to the original G25 racing wheel is finally on the scenes, as the G27 brings along real metal, real leather and a real taste of driving that can likely only be mimicked whilst seated in some sort of $30k+ sportster. The wheel is designed to function with Sony’s PS2 and PS3 as well as Windows-based PCs, and aside from the built-in force feedback mechanism, you’ll also find a pair of stainless steel shifter paddles, RPM / shift indicator lights and a clutch that fully supports heel-and-toe downshifting. Is all that realism worth $299.99? Judge with your wallet come September.

European retailer hacks €100 from PlayStation 3 in run-up to gamescom

If you know anything about European retailer Fnac, you know it’s not the go-to place for bargains. However, it’s this very outlet that’s now selling an 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle (which includes the console, a single controller and inFamous) for €100 less than its “everyday low price” as of yesterday. Of course, one major French retailer slashing the price on a system that’s long overdue for a break isn’t reason in and of itself reason to believe anything’s on the horizon, but pair this up with everything else we’ve heard over the past few weeks, and we’d say all the vague omens are pointing to a leaner, cheaper and altogether more dashing PS3 on August 18th. In our magical fantasy land, anyway.

Update: Our friends at Engadget Spanish just let us know that there’s been a price drop in Spain as well. Getting warmer…

[Thanks, Nelson]
