Sony sorts out the UK PSP-3000 release situation

Filed under:

Fear not, UK friends, you will be getting the eye-pleasing, battery-draining PSP-3000 just like everyone else, but it seems you won’t be getting quite as many bundle options as others in Europe. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the silver PSP-3000 bundle with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and the black PSP-3000 bundle with a 4GB Memory Stick won’t be making it to the UK, at least initially, leaving you with only the Go! communication, FIFA, Harry Potter, and Buzz! Master Quiz bundles to choose from. That, as you may have noticed, doesn’t include a stand-alone PSP-3000 option, but Sony assures us that’ll be arriving as well sometime after the bundles are released.

Bacteria returns with “Mini-Platform” console mod

Filed under:

Console modder “Bacteria” sure managed to turn a few heads with his previous multi-platform console mod, and he’s now done it again with his new so-called Mini-Platform Plug ‘n’ Play Console System, which boasts the same, uh, distinct look we’ve come to expect. At the moment, this one relies solely on a variety of TV plug ‘n’ play game systems for its gaming options, which Bacteria converted into a more convenient cart form, although he also promises to make a GBA add-on for the system “in due course.” As you can see in the video after the break, despite appearances, the system appears to work quite well, and you can even find step-by-step plans for building your own by hitting up the read link below.

PS3 firmware 3.0 locking out knock-off controllers

div align=centera href=httpboardsus.playstation.complaystationboardmessageboard.id=ps3updates&thread.id=97467&view=by_date_ascending&page=1img vspace=4 hspace=4 border=0 src=httpwww.blogcdn.comwww.engadget.commedia200909ds3white-09-03-09.jpg alt= abr ndiv align=leftWell, here’s a bit of a curious situation. As emJoystiqem reports, it wasn’t long after the a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090831playstation-3-firmware-3-0-now-availablePS3 firmware 3.0a went live that the first reports of problems started cropping up, with one particularly nagging issue being that some controllers (specifically the CECHZC2H Ceramic White DualShock3) seemed to be locked out of the console once the update was installed. After hashing it out a bit on the official PlayStation3 forum, however, users apparently determined that the controllers in question were in fact knock-offs and not official Sony product, which raises some different but just as interesting questions. Namely, is Sony locking the knock-offs out on purpose, or is firmware 3.0 just too much for them to handle For its part, Sony doesn’t seem to be saying anything on the matter just yet, but we’ll keep you posted. br br [Via a href=httpwww.joystiq.com20090902firmware-3-00-blamed-for-malfunctioning-ps3-controllersJoystiqa]br divndivpFiled under a href=httpwww.engadget.comcategorygaming rel=tagGamingapp style=padding5px;background#ddd;border1px solid #ccc;clearboth;a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090903ps3-firmware-3-0-locking-out-knock-off-controllersPS3 firmware 3.0 locking out knock-off controllersa originally appeared on a href=httpwww.engadget.comEngadgeta on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 180700 EST. Of course, there’s not a whole lot of surprises to be found, but we do also get a look at a somewhat sparse but straightforward user manual, and a couple of the usual dark and dreary test setup photos, which unfortunately don’t feature the FCC folks showing off their skills. While there’s expectedly not a whole lot of surprises, we do get a good look at the now non-removable battery (pictured above), the on-board memory, the familiar nub and controls and, of course, the complete lack of any UMD remnants — not to mention a curiously placed GameCube watermark. Sony’s Andrew House hints at more social networking for PS3

While he obviously didn’t get too specific, House did tell the emFinancial Timesem that Sony has plans for more social networking features, and apparently wouldn’t rule out a partnership with popular sites such as Facebook, much like Microsoft has a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090601xbox-live-gets-live-tv-streaming-netflix-browsingalready announceda for the Xbox 360. In PS3 price-cut news, House also noted that Sony is indeed aware that consumers are watching their euros and pounds more carefully than before, but added that it would not be fair to say this is a reaction to current market conditions.divnbr n[Via a href=httpwww.joystiq.com20090824sony-ps3-price-cut-not-due-to-market-conditions-more-socialJoystiqa]pFiled under a href=httpwww.engadget.comcategorygaming rel=tagGamingapp style=padding5px;background#ddd;border1px solid #ccc;clearboth;a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090825sonys-andrew-house-hints-at-more-social-networking-for-ps3Sony’s Andrew House hints at more social networking for PS3a originally appeared on a href=httpwww.engadget.comEngadgeta on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 141800 EST. NPD expects PS3 sales to jump 40-60% post-price cut

div style=text-align center; a href=httpwww.informationweek.comnewspersonal_techTV_theatershowArticle.jhtmlarticleID=219400930img vspace=4 hspace=4 border=0 alt= src=httpwww.blogcdn.comwww.engadget.commedia200908ps3-slim-feature-1.jpg adivnIt doesn’t take a whole lot of analysis to figure out that a $100 price cut will result in a boost in sales, but market research group a href=httpwww.engadget.comtagnpdNPDa seems to think that the PS3’s new $299 price point could have a particularly big impact on Sony’s numbers once next month’s sales are tallied up. While it’s obviously not a sure thing, NPD expects sales of the PS3 to jump between 40% and 60% over the course of September, noting that the USD 299 price point is important to getting to a point where the next segment of price-conscious consumers can jump into the market and it most certainly will re-energise sales of the platform. It’s also quick to point out, however, that those sales might not be enough for Sony to take the lead in US console sales for the month, adding that other systems might too take a price cut, and that content is still the key motivator of a hardware purchase decision.br nbr nbUpdate bia href=httpwww.joystiq.com20090824npd-40-60-sales-increase-projection-for-ps3-was-misquotedJoystiqai offers a clarification from the original quote that, historically, price cuts tend to lead to a 40 to 60 percent increase in sales over the previous, higher priced month. The group is not specifically predicting PS3’s sales, just pointing out what’s happened in the past — it’s a subtle but important difference. br nbr n[Via a href=httpwww.gamesindustry.bizarticlesnpd-ps3-price-cut-to-boost-sales-by-40-60-per-centgamesindustry.biza]pFiled under a href=httpwww.engadget.comcategorygaming rel=tagGamingapp style=padding5px;background#ddd;border1px solid #ccc;clearboth;a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090824npd-expects-ps3-sales-to-jump-40-60-post-price-cutNPD expects PS3 sales to jump 40-60% post-price cuta originally appeared on a href=httpwww.engadget.comEngadgeta on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 211600 EST.
