Reggie’s still spinning that “we’re working on it” line for Wii storage

We didn’t wake up today hoping to hate on Nintendo, but they’re making it a bit too easy. Granted, the Nintendo WiFi router could certainly find a place in the homes of the tech illiterate, but Nintendo keeps hiding behind the apron strings of its casual gamer fanbase, and we don’t have to sit around and take it. Two months after Nintendo finally admitted it had a problem with Wii storage and claimed to be “working on a solution,” Reggie’s still playing that line — to diminishing effects — in Club Nintendo, the official Nintendo mag of Latin America. He went on to say that “we have never said that it will be a hard drive nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store the games.” Weak. Nintendo could easily create a backup solution for SD cards or the ubiquitous thumbstick, but instead the company is letting its most active users suffer with the mere 512MB of built-in storage, requiring them to re-download games from the Wii Shop, and making few promises about when or what the storage solution will be — not cool, Nintendo. Phew, good to get that off our chests. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have some “High School Musical: Sing It!” to attend to.

Nintendo gets into the router game, plans to destroy competition by not really trying

Nintendo just announced a 5,800 Yen (about $54 US) WiFi router, built to take that pesky wired Ethernet internet and blast it across your home in a palatable WiFi fashion for use by your Wii or DS. Just like every other router ever. Only this one is cheap, cute and built by Nintendo, so watch out Linksys / Netgear / everybody. The “Nintendo WiFi Network Adapter,” meant to supplement 2005’s WiFi USB Connector, looks to be Japan-only at the moment, and is due for a September 18th release.

[Thanks, Sanimir]

PSP and 360 Chatpad are a match hacked in heaven

Some dedicated hackers have finally managed to get the PSP and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Chatpad typing. There are still a few kinks to smooth out, but the hard part seems over, with l0rdnic0 managing a tiny bit of soldiering using a PSP remote cable and some software from the Open Keyboard Project. It’s all still pretty nerdy at the moment, and we’re still miffed at that Logic 3 getting cancelled way back when, but we suppose this will have to do.

Zepto’s Hydra A17 leaves no cliche unturned

Let’s see, we’ve got tons of black, a semi-gothic dragon thing, a “Z” in the brand name and a mythological creature in the product name. Yup, Zepto’s new Hydra A17 is exactly what gamers need. Sure, the P9500 Core 2 Duo processor, 1920 x 1200 17-inch screen and NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX with 1GB of VRAM don’t hurt. There’s even a subwoofer and 4GB of RAM, yours for a mere £2,029 (about $3,585 US). Luckily, you can strip this one down to £1,420 (about $2,510 US) but you’ll have to sign over your gamer cred at the door — we might not even let you thread safety pins through your eyebrows.

PSP nabbing PlayStation Store this fall, online multiplayer over PS3

Evidently fearing some outbreak of freedom and excitement, Sony has notoriously guarded its PSP’s WiFi access closely, adding features such as Remote Play at a snail’s pace, and keeping such obvious adds as “ad-hoc” over the internet at bay. But no longer(ish). Sony is bringing ad-hoc online multiplayer to the PSP this fall, with a firmware update to allow the portable to network over the PS3. You’ll also be able to get social during gameplay, with text and voice chat in the new online mode. Additionally, the PSP is finally barging on to the PlayStation Store via WiFi, and Sony’s going to kick things off with a free downloadable game, “Mainichi Issyo Portable.” The best news is that this is compatible with all three PSP generations, so just because you can’t afford The Screen of Awesomeness doesn’t mean you’re out in the cold.

Piicron: why choose, when you can have it all? Invest now!

Filed under:

It’s hard to tell if those awesome consoles up above are artists renditions or very real pieces of gaming technology that will shake the industry at its core. So hard to tell. We won’t humor Piicron enough to actually describe their ideas (okay, just one: Ubercron, a $500 console that can play “any game ever released to any console” with its 3.2GHz quad-core processor) but we do recommend clicking on over to the website, where you can easily squander an afternoon reading through all this insanity. To be honest, we’re almost a little disappointed none of this is grounded in reality, or even vaguely aware of reality: at least Phantom was trying.

PS3 Slim already sold out at many a retail store

New Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite boxes shot once again in the wild, spelling doom for the middle sibling

He brought home the Arcade SKU and snapped some shots, while that new white-boxed Elite is still out there in his Reno store, confusing customers and blue shirts alike. Interestingly, Microsoft’s announcement pattern was quite similar when the Arcade was originally introduced — we actually had an a href=httpwww.engadget.com20071014xbox-360-arcade-unboxedunboxing of a store-bought systema before it became official — and most other 360 price cuts have been widely publicized before Microsoft gives in.
