Another Study Attacks Violent Video Games, Claims To Be “Conclusive”

Killer Orca is one of many to tell us about a new study on the effects of violent video games on kids. The latest meta-study that analyzed research from 130 different reports claims to have “conclusively proven” that violent video games make more aggressive, less caring kids. “The team used meta-analytic procedures — the statistical methods used to analyze and combine results from previous, related literature — to test the effects of violent video game play on the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings of the individuals, ranging from elementary school-aged children to college undergraduates. [...] Anderson says the new study may be his last meta-analysis on violent video games because of its definitive findings.”

Why Has No One Made a Great Gaming Phone?

andylim writes “According to Engadget, John Koller, Sony’s head of PlayStation marketing, recently said that ‘Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.’ What’s odd though is that everyone knows that the mobile phone gaming market is a huge and yet neither Sony nor Nintendo has made a gaming phone yet. Recombu.com thinks that Nokia could enter the space with PSP-like devices and it has come up with a concept phone called the Ovi Orion, which would bridge the gap between phone and console, ‘If the iPhone is Wii, then Ovi Orion would be Xbox and offer Xbox Live style features. A serious gaming phone for serious gamers.’”

Video Game Music Recognition Gets a Boost

kghapa writes to tell us that for the first time ever, video game music is getting a much higher level of recognition through inclusion in this year’s Ivor Novello Awards in London. “With the growing recognition of the immense detail and complex music compositions that are dedicated to video games, it seemed only a matter of time until game music was given some rightful spotlight. As the huge success and popularity of the fully orchestrated ‘Video Games Live’ concert has proved, modern and even classic games of days past have truly awe-inspiring musical scores. This concert alone has sold up to half a million tickets and featured music from a wide variety of games and gaming eras, from World of Warcraft to Zelda.”

Nintendo Shuts Down Fan-Made Zelda Movie

Andorin writes “An independently filmed adaptation of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, called The Hero Of Time, has been taken offline by Nintendo as of the end of December. The film’s producers write: ‘We came to an agreement with Nintendo earlier this month to stop distributing the film… We understand Nintendo’s right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan’s interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself — even from fan-works with good intentions.’ Filming for the feature-length, non-profit film began in August 2004 and the movie was completed in 2008. It premiered in various theaters worldwide, including in New York and Los Angeles, and then became available online in the middle of December, before it was targeted by Nintendo’s legal team. As both an avid Zelda fan and an appreciator of independent works, I was extremely disappointed in Nintendo’s strong-arming of a noncommercial adaptation to the Game of the Year for 1999.”

In-Game Advertising Makes Games Better?

Pretty much every time we hear about a game launching in-game advertising it sounds like a horrible idea that will only serve to detract from the experience. However JJ Richards of Massive wants you to give it a chance, claiming that if done correctly it can not only work, but actually enhance the overall experience. “In fact, according to Massive’s research, gamers like ads. Here’s the caveat: they have to add to the gaming experience. He describes a game that takes place in Times Square. With no ads, it’s not real at all. With generic ads, it’s a little better. ‘Now imagine Times Square with ads you just saw on television or read in a newspaper—the latest movie release or television show or a new car model,’ he said. ‘Imagine further that it is up-to-the-minute, whether you played your game today or six months from now. That is much more realistic.’ His argument is that gamers consume the experience of ads, not just the ads themselves. ‘The ads add to and enhance that experience, and our research shows that it is highly effective for both game play as well as advertisers.’”

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time Offers New Gameplay Mechanic

Ars Technica has a great look at the latest installment in the Ratchet and Clank series, “A Crack in Time.” Along with the great looking graphics and same great gameplay, A Crack in Time offers a brand new game mechanic: “time pads.” Time pads allow you to make a copy of yourself and move through a series of action, then shift back to “real time” and interact with your past self. “It’s a game mechanic that’s hard to describe in words, and wrapping your head around it inside the game isn’t much easier when it’s first described with an example or two. You have to play with it and bend time to your will before you see just how ingenious the whole thing is. The puzzles begin simply and grow harder as the game moves on. The use of time is done very well and elevates what we’ve played of the game from another platforming experience to something truly special.”

Blizzard Offers Look Inside WoW At GDC

Yesterday morning at GDC Austin, Blizzard’s J. Allen Brack and Frank Pearce took to the stage to finally give a peek inside the inner workings of World of Warcraft. Tipping the scales at around 4,600 people utilizing 20,000 computer systems and 1.3 petabytes of storage, Blizzard has created a raging behemoth. The Online Network services group alone has “data centers from Texas to Seoul, and monitor over 13,250 server blades, 75,000 cpu cores, and 112.5 terabytes of blade RAM. [Pearce] points out the picture of the GNOC (Global Network Operations Center) in their slideshow, a data core that even has televisions tuned to the weather stations. They use those to ensure that conditions of the data center are up to their standards; with only a staff of 68 people they ensure connectivity across the globe for the numerous WoW servers.”

Well, Blizzcon 2009 is about to get underway (look for the big news from the keynote in a few hours) and given how fast it sold out I’m sure there are still many rabid fans interested in what Blizzard might have to say that don’t want to shell out the $40 for Pay-Per-View access. If there is anything you wish to know about the progress or juicy details from any of these teams please leave it in the comments below. Iowa Aims to Establish International Video Game Hall of Fame

eldavojohn writes “Anyone who’s seen King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters knows that Ottumwa, Iowa is the Dodge City of video games. Yesterday, 3,500 people showed up to the kick-off speech that announced the intent to build the International Video Game Hall of Fame right there. Radio Free Iowa states Ottumwa’s desire to become the ‘video game capital of the world’ and held a Halo 3 and Guitar Hero tournament there yesterday. Comparing the MMO Industry With the Silver Screen

Karen Hertzberg writes “With video gaming — specifically the massively multiplayer online titles — quickly surpassing Hollywood’s cash flow, it seems logical that the silver suits at Tinsel Town would begin paying attention to their digital brethren. On the same line of thought, Hollywood provides the MMO industry with a history in the entertainment medium that we simply don’t have. Ten Ton Hammer’s Cody Bye sat down with four industry experts to draw together some similarities between MMOs and films, and he attempted to use those points to draw out some predictions for the future of the MMO gaming industry.”
