Woolworth’s to cut Xbox 360 console prices in the UK?

Filed under:

We received the image above from a supposed Woolworth’s employee who scanned an upcoming retail catalog for our sicko pleasures. We can’t verify the claim, but we understand that Woolies is in the midst of an escalating, retail price war in the UK gaming space. As such, what we’re likely looking at are promotional cuts from the normal, £160, £200, £260 prices for the Arcade, Premium, and Xbox 360 Elite consoles, respectively. Then again, the across the board price cuts in the US seem to have really paid off so who knows.

[Thanks, Anonymous Tipster]

Microsoft: Xbox 360 sales double since price cuts

Filed under:

Good things happen when you suddenly become the lowest-priced console in the US. In the first weekend since cutting Xbox 360 prices, Microsoft is reporting a 100% increase in sales of all Xbox 360 models compared to the previous weekend. While not mentioned specifically, Microsoft claims that one model sold at 6x the previous weekend rate. Gee, could that be the $250 Wii-beating, $199.99 Xbox 360 Arcade at the front of Microsoft’s loss-leading lineup?

Gizmondo taking Android for a ride?

Like a fiery car crash across the center divide, we just can’t divert our attention from the antics of Gizmondo. Gizmondoforums, the self-described “home of the Gizmondo fanbase” (really, they have enough fans to create a base?) is carrying this quote from Rich Jenkins, who along with Carl Freer co-founded Media Power, the company now in charge of Gizmondo:

“We are excited about the potential of Android and have been working on an Android version of the Giz…Android would be a TERRIFIC addition to the Gizmondo and enable a TON of open source development.”

Originally, the Gizmondo 2.0 gaming console was expected said to be WinCE 6-based and scheduled for an end of 2008 release. While this Android talk makes it all a bit more interesting, it certainly doesn’t make it any more likely to happen.

Xbox 360 now cheapest console in the US — game on Santa

Filed under:

It’s Friday the 5th, that means that the $200 Xbox 360 just became the lowest-priced console in the US (as it is in Japan) compared to the perpetually “sold out” $250 Wii and 80GB PS3 selling for double the price of a diskless Arcade. With no new price cuts expected from either Sony or Nintendo, the holiday console wars are officially on. Picture proof of the $199.99 Xbox 360 Arcade in the wild after the break.

Sony’s SOCOM PS3 Bluetooth headset gets official

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan just got official with its PlayStation-branded SOCOM Bluetooth headset (model CEJH-15002) we’ve seen bouncing around since June. Set for a ¥5,000 (about $46 tax inclusive) release on October 30th in Japan along side SOCOM:CONFRONTATION, the Bluetooth 2.1+EDR headset with noise cancellation will automatically pair with your PS3, making it ready for games supporting on-line chat like SOCOM and Resistance 2 coming November 13th. The bundled USB cradle will charge the headset for up to 8-hours of voice. As a bonus, when used with the PS3 you’ll be treated to on-screen indicators showing your connection status, battery charge and speaker levels and microphone mute status all at the push of a button. And for those of you wondering, yes, it should pair just fine with your cellphone since it supports both the HSP and HFP Bluetooth profiles.

Nikkei: Xbox 360 price drops to $182 in Japan (update: now official)

Filed under:

Japan’s Nikkei is reporting what we’ve been hearing Stateside for weeks: Xbox 360 price cuts across the board. Expected to go official sometime later today, the Japanese Xbox 360 Arcade will drop to just ¥19,800 or about $182 (tax inclusive, presumably) in hopes of boosting sales. The new pricing represents a near 30% drop from its previous ¥27,800 (about $256) price and undercuts the Wii sold locally for ¥25,000. Nikkei’s sources also claim that Microsoft will cut the prices on all three Xbox 360 models without going into specifics. If true then this bodes well for the US price cuts expected on September 7th.

Update: It’s official. Microsoft also announced a new ¥29,800 (about $277) price for the Xbox 360 with 60GB hard disk while the top-end Elite will now sell for ¥39,800 (about $369). The new prices go into effect on September 11th.

PS3 Slim hardware still losing money

You remember, the event that saw the official launch of the a href=httpwww.engadget.comtagps3%20slimPS3 Slima. The Q&A is an interesting read in whole, but the answer that stands out comes in response to a question about whether the lower-priced $299 PS3 Slim will be sold at a loss relative to its cost to manufacture. Yes, was the quick answer from Kaz. That’s a surprise for two reasons. First, the PS3 Slim benefits from more efficient a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090820ps3-slim-is-cheaper-yes-and-faster-maybe45-nm manufacturing processesa used on its smaller, less power-hungry Cell processor. Also, just last month Sony’s CFO told investors that manufacturing costs of the PS3 had dropped by a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090731ps3-manufacturing-costs-down-70-percent-strange-it-doesnt-feeabout 70%, roughly speakinga — that comes to about $240 based on original manufacturing a href=httpwww.engadget.com20060218playstation-3-costs-900-sez-merrill-lynch-mobestimatesa of a href=httpwww.engadget.com20061116sony-losing-mad-loot-on-each-ps3$800a when the PS3 launched back in 2006. Regardless, a console being sold as a loss-leader is nothing new in the gaming industry and, as Kaz points out, will almost certainly be offset by looking at the PS3 as a platform that includes the hardware, software, peripherals, and services.br br [Via a href=httpwww.gamesindustry.bizarticlessony-losing-money-on-every-ps3-slim-soldGamesIndustry.biza]pFiled under a href=httpwww.engadget.comcategorygaming rel=tagGamingapp style=padding5px;background#ddd;border1px solid #ccc;clearboth;a href=httpwww.engadget.com20090825sony-still-losing-money-of-ps3-slim-hardwarePS3 Slim hardware still losing moneya originally appeared on a href=httpwww.engadget.comEngadgeta on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 052300 EST.
