iCade, an Arcade Cabinet Docking Bay For Your iPad

schmidt349 writes “ThinkGeek has announced a cool new accessory for that iPad you’re too ashamed to be seen buying in the Apple Store. iCade is an arcade cabinet/dock that lets you play all your favorite vintage arcade games at your desk, on the airplane, or in the bathroom with an authentic look and feel. Games are still being licensed, but iCade’s launch titles include Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, and everyone’s favorite, Super Steve Brothers. Quarters, thick veil of cigarette smoke, and annoying eight-year-olds are not included.”

Has Apple Created the Perfect Board Game Platform?

andylim writes “recombu.com is running an interesting piece about how Apple has created a ‘Jumanji (board game) platform.’ The 9.7-inch multi-touch screen is perfect for playing board games at home, and you could use Wi-Fi or 3G to play against other people when you’re on your own. What would be really interesting is if you could pair the iPad with iPhones, ‘Imagine a Scrabble iPad game that used iPhones as letter holders. You could hold up your iPhone so that no one else could see your letters and when you were ready to make a word on the Scrabble iPad board, you could slide them on to the board by flicking the word tiles off your iPhone.’ Now that would be cool.”

iPhone 3GS emulates N64, blows minds in the process

Look what we have here — a preview of 3G4, a N64 emulator developed by NWorksDev. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G, this bad boy appears to be rendering down the graphics (as one would expect) but all in all it seems to be running pretty smoothly. Of course, this is a work in progress: the developer (who claims to be 14 years old) says that he has to overcome duplicate button registers, delayed presses, and some crashing — and he has yet to implement the L, R, and Z keys. That said, this thing is pretty sweet! Hit up the YouTube links for info on becoming a beta tester — but not before you see the thing in action after the break.

4iThumbs overlay adds a tactile keyboard to your iPhone… sorta (video)

The iPhone keyboard (or the lack thereof) has been a polarizing point for many, and while we’ve seen a workaround or two in our day, we’ve yet to see a solution to the lack of tactility as beautifully simple as this. 4iThumbs is a screen overlay that adds minuscule bumps on your iPhone display — bumps that correspond to where the keys are when using the vertical keyboard. ‘Course, these things are apt to bug you when using the horizontal keyboard (or no keyboard at all), but we’re guessing the heavy texters in the crowd won’t mind. Have a look at the videos below the break for a better idea of what you’re about to get yourself into. Oh, and be sure to pick up a pair of Awethumbs while you’re at it — we hear these two go great together.

Update: A horizontal version is available, hooray!

iPhone to be sold by Tesco in the UK, hemorrhages cachet

So we know the iPhone has been slumming it and selling itself on Walmart shelves in the US for a while now, but it’s retained a somewhat more dignified cachet over here in Europe. Until today, that is. Just “in time for Christmas,” British retailer Tesco will make it possible for you to buy your socks, no-frills groceries, and shiny smartphone all in the same place. You’ll still be riding O2’s network, thanks to the Tesco Mobile service, but the department store chain is likely to price its contracts more aggressively, as it already has a £30 per month plan that includes unlimited calls, texts, and web surfing. Maybe there’s something to this whole “competition” thing after all then, eh?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Apple tablet(s) in 2H 2010 with OLED screen and tailored content in tow?

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/tech_news/Apple_tablet_s_in_2H_2010_with_OLED_screen’; Rumors of the mythical Apple tablet’s release were just starting to coalesce around an early 2010 release, so naturally DigiTimes is now reporting that the much ballyhooed device won’t show up until the second half of next year. Apple is said to have given itself more time to swap out internals and install a 9.7-inch OLED display from LG, which meshes with earlier rumors about where the relationship between the two companies was heading. Sources expect the opening retail price to be around a hefty $2,000, but for the budget-conscious there will also be a 10.6-inch LCD version that will land somewhere between $800 and $1,000. Or so we’re told. Somewhat more concrete is the news that Conde Nast, publisher of Wired Magazine, has openly confirmed that it is developing a digital version of its tech magazine for consumption on the Apple tablet, with the rest of its content catalog to soon follow. Its own estimate of having the paid-for digitized magazines, which will include Vogue and GQ, ready for the middle of 2010 also jibes with the reported delays. Then again, Apple has refused to discuss the unannounced device with anyone, leaving Conde and Adobe developing the necessary software in the dark.
