Double Fine Raises $700,000 In 24 Hours With Crowdfunding


redletterdave writes “San Francisco-based game developer Double Fine took to Kickstarter to fund its next game project, and so far, the studio has enjoyed unprecedented success through crowdsourcing. The project, which was announced by the studio’s founder Tim Schafer on Wednesday night, has already raised more than $700,000 in less than 24 hours. The funding frenzy has set new Kickstarter records for most funds raised in the first 24 hours, and highest number of backers of all-time, though both of those numbers are still growing. Schafer says he will build a ‘classic point-and-click adventure game’ in a six-to-eight month time frame, and will document the entire production process for fans to observe and give input on the game’s development, which ‘will actually affect the direction the game takes.’”

Simulators Take the Humans Out of Hiring


Hugh Pickens writes “Ken Gaebler discusses a new way of hiring called ‘employment simulations,’ which are gaining popularity among high-tech firms that are seeking data from prospective employees that you can’t get from sit-down interviews. In a typical employment simulation, candidates participate in online ‘video games’ that leverage simulation software to determine how well candidates perform in actual job situations. ‘There are no questions about your former work experience and office habits. There’s simply a computer game. If you win, you get the job. If you lose, game over.’ As one example, call centers are very amenable to simulations because the work environment (a series of computer programs and databases) is relatively easy to replicate and the tasks that make up job performance are easy to measure (data entry speed and accuracy, customer service, multitasking, etc). Other employment simulation programs have been written for healthcare, insurance, retail sales, financial services, hospitality and travel, manufacturing and automotive, and telecom and utilities. But skeptics say employment simulators and other computer-based hiring models have some drawbacks. ‘Like any technology, the effectiveness of employment simulations is limited to the quality of the software and its accessibility to users,’ says Gaebler.”

Leaked Zynga Memo Justifies Copycat Strategy


bonch writes “After taking heat over allegations of copying hit indie game Tiny Tower, Zynga founder Mark Pincus wrote an internal memo justifying the company’s strategy of cloning competing titles, citing the Google search engine and Apple iPod as successful products which weren’t first in their markets. Pincus infamously told employees: ‘I don’t want f*cking innovation. You’re not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers.’”

Anger With Game Content Lock Spurs Reaction From Studio Head Curt Shilling


MojoKid writes “Studios and publishers are fighting back hard against the used game market, with the upcoming title Kingdoms of Amular the latest to declare it will use a content lock. In this case, KoA ups the ante by locking out part of the game that’s normally available in single-player mode. Gamers exploded, with many angry that game content that had shipped on the physical disc was locked away and missing, as well as being angry at the fact that content was withheld from used game players. One forum thread asking if the studio fought back against allowing EA to lock the content went on for 49 pages before Curt Shilling, the head of 38 Studios, took to the forums himself. His commentary on the situation is blunt and to the point. ‘This is not 38 trying to take more of your money, or EA in this case, this is us rewarding people for helping us! If you disagree due to methodology, ok, but that is our intent… companies are still trying to figure out how to receive dollars spent on games they make, when they are bought. Is that wrong? if so please tell me how.’”

Microsoft To Back Kinect-Based Startups

Developers with Kinect applications for the Xbox or Windows are invited to apply to the Kinect Accelerator program, even though Microsoft does not yet allow the sale of products based on Kinect for Windows.”

Why Microsoft Embraced Gaming


wjousts writes “A interesting take on the birth of the Xbox from Technology Review: ‘When the original Xbox video-game console went on sale in 2001, it wasn’t clear why Microsoft, known for staid workplace software, was branching out into fast-paced action games. But Microsoft decided that capitalizing on the popularity of gaming could help the company position itself for the coming wave of home digital entertainment. “Microsoft saw the writing on the wall,” says David Dennis, a spokesman for Xbox. “It wanted to have a beachhead in the living room.” … Now Microsoft is linking Xbox 360, its most successful consumer-focused brand, with others that have not been as well received. It is integrating Bing, its search engine, into Xbox and Xbox Live to enable people to search for multimedia content. By the end of the year, Microsoft is expected to unveil an updated Xbox Live design that is more in line with the look of Windows phones and the forthcoming Windows 8.’”

‘Free’ Games Dominate Top-Grossing Game List On App Store


An anonymous reader writes “Why are there so many free games listed in the top 10 grossing games over in Apple’s App Store? Because some feature exorbitant in-app purchase fees for virtual items. Quoting ZDNet: ‘Developing “free” games aimed specifically at children, and then bundling ridiculously priced in-app purchases inside those “free” games feels scammy to me. Sure, it’s not illegal, and it’s not against Apple’s developer terms and conditions, but Apple is a company that prides itself in protecting users from harm. Most of the game developers do make an attempt to warn users that the game “changes real money for additional in-app content” but it’s a lame attempt. It’s easily missed, and kids aren’t going to read it anyway.’”

CCP Deconstructs EVE Online’s Microtransaction Missteps

A few months ago we discussed an uproar in the EVE Online community over CCP Games’ implementation of microtransactions within the game. Hilmar Pétursson, the company’s CEO, recently posted a lengthy apology and an explanation of their thought process, which he admits was “wrong.” Now, at GDC Online, CCP has gone into further detail about the lessons they’ve learned from the fiasco. Quoting:
“Of the eight original items, Cockerill said all but one was in the mid- to high-tier price range. Players naturally assumed the lower-tier range would be neglected going forward, which served to push some of them away. The second wave (and the forthcoming fourth wave) featured more lower-tier options, but it wasn’t enough. Cockerill said virtual-goods sellers should release a range of goods at all of their price points to start with, or else they’ll face the wrath of the user base. What’s more, the team should have targeted the desires of its then-current user base, who cared much more about having virtual clothes for their ships instead of their avatars.”
