Gwmaw writes “A reported 98 percent of medical students surveyed at the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin-Madison liked the idea of using technology to enhance their medical education, according to a study published online in BMC Medical Education. For example, a virtual environment could help medical students learn how to interview a patient or run a patient clinic. In the survey, 80 percent of students said computer games can have an educational value.”

An anonymous reader writes “The core of how people first learn to do stuff — programming, music, writing, etc. — is to imitate others. It’s one of the best ways to learn. Apparently a bunch of students using MIT’s educational Scratch programming language understand this. But not everyone else does. NAMCO Bandai sent a takedown notice to MIT because some kids had recreated Pac-man with Scratch. The NAMCO letter is pretty condescending as well, noting that it understands the educational purpose of Scratch, but ‘part of their education should include concern for the intellectual property of others.’”

zaphod was one of several readers unhappy with the sentiment expressed in President Obama’s graduation address to the students of Virginia’s Hampton University, writing: “According to Obama, ‘information becomes a distraction’ when it comes to iPads, the Xbox, etc. (All items he admits not knowing how to use.) He’s basically saying we are getting too much information too quickly, and from ‘unreliable sources.’ Of course, he’s referring to talk radio, blogs and other mediums that tend to disagree with his political views.”
CNET has a slightly different, less critical reaction, focusing on the differences among the actual devices named; they note that the Xbox is not an iPad.

Hugh Pickens writes “The Washington Post reports that officials at George Mason University are quickly finding out that they have vastly underestimated interest in the school’s new bachelor’s degree in video game design. ‘We’ve been overwhelmed,’ says Scott M. Martin, assistant dean for technology, research, and advancement at GMU. ‘Our anticipated enrollment for the fall is 500 percent higher than we expected.’ George Mason first offered the program last fall, when officials anticipated that it would enroll about 30 full-time students, but currently 200 students are enrolled and that number is increasing. Course titles under the program include ‘History of Computer Game Design,’ while other courses focus on computer programming, digital arts, and graphics and motion capture. Although many colleges offer courses and degrees in computer gaming in the United States, GMU offers the only four-year program in the DC area, an important market for gaming because serious games — those used to train military and special operations, doctors, and others who use simulators — are becoming a market force in the region because of the proximity to federal government centers.”

MojoKid writes “Shigeru Miyamoto, who has had a hand in some of Nintendo’s most popular titles, recently offered that he is working hard to turn Nintendo’s DS line of handheld gaming machines into tools for schools. The DS already has a nice line of educational software titles that help users learn, and he thinks that this could really be a huge benefit to schools looking for alternative ways to educate students of a new generation. The company has already managed to get them into Japanese elementary schools.”

schliz writes “Like in World of Warcraft, students of Indiana University’s game design classes start as Level 1 avatars with 0 XP, and progress by completing quests solo, as guilds, or in ‘pick up groups.’ Course coordinator Lee Sheldon says students are responding with ‘far greater enthusiasm,’ and many specifics of game design could also be directly applied to the workforce. These included: clearly defining goals for workers; providing incremental rewards; and balancing effort and reward.”

dcollins writes “Researchers at Denison University in Ohio have shown that giving PlayStations to young boys leads to slower progress in reading and writing skills. Quoting: ‘The study is the first controlled trial to look at the effects of playing video games on learning in young boys. That is to say, the findings aren’t based on survey data of kids’ game habits, but instead on a specific group of children that were randomly assigned to receive a PlayStation or not … Those with PlayStations also spent less time engaged in educational activities after school and showed less advancement in their reading and writing skills over time than the control group, according to tests taken by the kids. While the game-system owners didn’t show significant behavioral problems, their teachers did report delays in learning academic skills, including writing and spelling.’”

krou writes “The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting story about how the University of Wyoming’s English Department is helping fund a collective called the Learning Games Initiative to study video games. Jason Thompson, an assistant professor at UW who is part of the group, explains that ‘it’s a group of people [who] do research on games, do development on games, and keep an archive of games printed matter such as manuals, … systems, all of it. We really look at games as cultural artifacts; things that reveal theology, things that reveal power. Things that should be studied in the academy.’ The English Department has been very open-minded with the project, because they understand that gaming can educate people, and that ‘we can expand our notion of what text and study is; the idea that it might be fun doesn’t necessarily preclude its study.’ Thompson believes that it’s important for academia to study gaming, because games could be used in the future as a type of textbook: ‘if games can teach, then as teachers shouldn’t we understand what kind of teaching’s going on?’”

A piece up at Mashable explores how some schools and universities are finding success at integrating social gaming into their education curriculum. Various game-related programs are getting assistance these days from sources like the government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
“For the less well-to-do educator, the Federation of American Scientists has developed a first-person shooter-inspired cellular biology curriculum. Gamers explore the fully-interactive 3D world of an ill patient and assist the immune system in fighting back a bacterial infection. Dr. Melanie Ann Stegman has been evaluating the educational impacts of the game and is optimistic about her preliminary findings. ‘The amount of detail about proteins, chemical signals and gene regulation that these 15-year-olds were devouring was amazing. Their questions were insightful. I felt like I was having a discussion with scientist colleagues,’ said Stegman. Perhaps more importantly, the video game excites students about science. Motivating more youngsters to adopt a science-related career track has became a major education initiative of the Obama administration. So desperate to find a solution that motivates students to become scientists, the government has even enlisted Darpa, the Department of Defense’s ‘mad scientist’ research organization, to figure out a solution.”
