A Look At One of Blizzard’s Retired World of Warcraft Servers


MojoKid writes “At last count, Activision Blizzard pegged the number of World of Warcraft subscribers at 10.2 million. It takes a massive amount of gear to host all the different game worlds, or realms, as they’re referred to. Each realm is hosted on its own server, and in late 2011, Activision Blizzard began auctioning off retired server blades from the days of yore to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They sold around 2,000 retired Hewlett-Packard p-Class server blades on eBay and donated 100 percent of the proceeds (minus auction expenses) to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which seeks to advance the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children. ‘The Art of Video Games’ Exhibition Opens

To kick it off, they’re holding a three-day festival with panel discussions, live action gaming, and crafting activities. ‘Video games allow us as human beings to explore our dreams, our fears, our thoughts, our morals, and engage with each other in a way that no other medium allows us to. I find that inspiring and beautiful, and I am so happy to be alive during this time. We are going to experience, I think, one of the greatest surges of artistic intent in human history, and I believe that the majority of it will come through video games,’ said Chris Melissinos, former Sun exec and guest curator of the new exhibition.”

Playing With Friends Makes You a Better Gamer


An anonymous reader writes “Computer scientists at the University of Colorado and the Stevens Institute of Technology have shown that gamers that play with friends play better. The study used the blockbuster FPS Halo: Reach as a testbed, and combined ground truth data on friendships from an anonymous survey with data about the multiplayer competitions extracted using the Reach Stats API. They found that the more friends you have on your team, the more assists, the fewer betrayals, the more you score, and the greater the probability your team wins, and that this ‘friends for the win’ effect goes above and beyond the benefits of playing with skilled strangers. (They also show that older gamers are statistically better than younger players, contrary to popular opinion.) Study lead Prof. Aaron Clauset, writing on his blog, says that friends ‘may be able to effectively anticipate or adapt to each others’ actions or strategies without an explicit need for verbal (and thus time consuming) communication or coordination,’ and ‘these effects may be fairly universal, and not merely limited to the traditional domains like sports and war, where practicing together has a long tradition.’”

It’s New. It’s a League. It’s for Gamers. It’s the League for Gamers! (Video)


Intrepid correspondent Timothy Lord writes, “I talked at SXSW with Kari Hale of League For Gamers, an organization started just a few months ago by Red 5 Studios founder CEO Mark Kern. (Kern was also team lead for World of Warcraft.) League for Gamers shares some of the goals of groups like the EFF and EPIC, but — as you might guess from the name — is tightly focused on the world of gaming. The group owes its existence to SOPA; the money used to start it up had initially been budgeted for Red 5 Studios’ appearance at the most recent E3, but E3 sponsor’s Entertainment Software Association’s support for SOPA led Kern to withdraw from the show. Kari gave a quick rundown of the origins of the League, what it hopes to accomplish, and what sorts of efforts it’s so far undertaken.”

Valve Reportedly Working On ‘Steam Box’ Gaming Console


An anonymous reader writes “This article at the Verge claims that Valve is currently working on a way to bring Steam to the living room with its own gaming console. Quoting: ‘According to sources, the company has been working on a hardware spec and associated software which would make up the backbone of a “Steam Box.” The actual devices may be made by a variety of partners, and the software would be readily available to any company that wants to get in the game. Adding fuel to that fire is a rumor that the Alienware X51 may have been designed with an early spec of the system in mind, and will be retroactively upgradable to the software. Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We’re told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA’s Origin) to be loaded up. Part of the goal of establishing a baseline for hardware, we’re told, is that it will give developers a clear lifecycle for their products, with changes possibly coming every three to four years. Additionally, there won’t be a required devkit, and there will be no licensing fees to create software for the platform.’”

Video Games: Goods Or Services?


silentbrad points out an article about the gradual shift of video games from being ‘goods’ to being ’services.’ They spoke with games lawyer Jas Purewal, who says the legal interpretation is murky: “If we’re talking about boxed-product games, there’s a good argument the physical boxed product is a ‘good,’ but we don’t know definitively if the software on it, or more generally software which is digitally distributed, is a good or a service. In the absence of a definitive legal answer, software and games companies have generally treated software itself as a service – which means treating games like World of Warcraft as well as platforms like Steam or Xbox LIVE as a service.” The article continues, “The free-to-play business model is particularly interesting, because the providers of the game willingly relinquish direct profits in exchange for greater control over how players receive the game, play it, and eventually pay for it. This control isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. It can help companies to better understand what gamers want from their games, and done properly such services can benefit both gamers and publishers. Of course, the emphasis here is on the phrase ‘done properly.’ Such control can easily be abused.”

Violent Video Games Only Affect Some People

An anonymous reader writes “The media would have you believe that violent video games will be the downfall of our civilization and the cause of moral decline in young people. A recent study suggests that most people aren’t so easily influenced by the violence; instead, just a few bad apples are likely to react poorly, with everyone else showing little or no effect from playing these games.”
The American Psychological Association has posted the academic paper (PDF) as well, in addition to a few related studies. One examines how games can be a force for good (PDF), and another looks at the motivations behind children playing such games (PDF).

What Gamers Have In Common With Top Athletes

nk497 writes “It’s no surprise that professional gamers aren’t quite as fit as elite athletes, but they do have something in common. According to a British academic, top-level players show similar psychological attributes as top athletes, such as the ability to manage anxiety, and have reaction times on par with fighter pilots. Dr. Micklewright said, ‘When I first got asked to do [the study], my initial reaction was “don’t be ridiculous, gaming is nothing like sport.” But the more I thought about it, the more similarities [became clear], and I became more and more convinced that it was close in many ways to sport.’ While sitting in front of a screen might not have the same physical demands as running a marathon, neither do playing snooker or darts. Still, while gamers show good reflexes, their health was worse than expected, with one 20-something professional player showing the same aerobic health as a 60-year-old smoker.” This story is based on a BBC radio report which you can currently hear, although that link seems to say that it won’t last.

Study Finds That “Extreme Gamers” Play 48 Hours a Week

According to a new study from market research firm NPD Group, to be considered among the real hardcore you’ll need to play an average of 48.5 hours a week — nearly seven hours a day. This group of gamers is, on average, ‘29 years old, and — perhaps surprisingly — one-third of them are female. They’re more likely to play on consoles than on the PC, and on average they’ve purchased 24 titles in the past three months — a bill that could easily run over a thousand dollars. But dedicated though they may be, the Extreme Gamers are just a small minority: a mere 4% of the US’s 174-million-strong gaming public. ‘”
