Hello World On PS Vita, Thanks to Buffer Overflow

YokimaSun writes “Mamosuke, a PSP Homebrewer from Japan, has posted the first Hello World on the PS Vita which comes from the PSP Emulator in the console. Using a buffer overflow, he has found a way into the PSVita, and with many PSP Game exploits still around and not published for the whole homebrew and hacking community this means that in the short term homebrew is here on the PSvita. Lets hope this is the start of a true PSVita homebrew scene.”

Stuffing a PS3 and an Xbox 360 Into a PC Case

An anonymous reader writes “A man identifying himself as ‘Timofiend’ has posted a detailed walkthrough of how he built an impressive case mod that fits both a PlayStation 3 and an Xbox 360 into a mid-tower computer case. He used one of the newer Slim 360 models hooked up to an ATX power supply, and one of the bulkier old PS3 units, with its standard power supply as well. After arranging the internal boards, persuading the two optical drives to fit and loading up on fans to prevent overheating, he wound up with a very cool (and functional!) blend of gaming platforms.”

Exercise Your Thumbs and Eyeballs With a Tiny Space Invaders Cabinet

dotarray writes with this piece on GamePron with a piece of game pr0n: “If you’re big on nostalgia, but small on space, we might just have the solution for you. A clever gentleman has created a teeny-tiny ’80s arcade cabinet that will fit happily on your desktop – and while it might look like a mere mock-up, this one actually works, playing Space Invaders on the miniature screen.”

How One Man Helps Keep Game Controllers Accessible

capedgirardeau writes with a clipping from the AP about engineer Ken Yankelevitz: “[W]ith the retired Bozeman engineer’s 70th birthday approaching, disabled gamers say they fear there will be no one to replace Yankelevitz, who has sustained quadriplegic game controllers for 30 years almost entirely by himself. The retired aerospace engineer hand makes the controllers with custom parts in his Montana workshop, offering them at a price just enough to cover parts.” Yankelevitz builds interfaces to control an Xbox 360 or PlayStation.

Fellow Hackers Blast Geohot For Sony Settlement

RedEaredSlider writes “The hacker who settled with Sony after the company sued him for modifying his PlayStation 3 console is getting a lot of flak for not taking the fight further. ‘Night Breed’ [wrote], ‘So basically you settled for a job and took people’s money, giving them a false hope of settling for their rights? What do you plan to do with the money that was donated to you to provide a cushion for the legal battle? I hope you will be paying all those people back since you obviously didn’t live up to your word.’”

Kinect Used To Help the Visually Impaired

Zothecula writes “The decidedly low tech white cane is still one of the most commonly used tools to help the visually impaired get around without bumping into things. Now, through their project called NAVI (Navigation Aids for the Visually Impaired), students at Germany’s Universität Konstanz have leveraged the 3D imaging capabilities of Microsoft’s Kinect camera to detect objects that lie outside a cane’s small radius and alert the wearer to the location of obstacles through audio and vibro-tactile feedback.”
In addition, Kinect is being used to “manipulate medical images during surgery without having to leave the operating room and scrub back in,” and in more artistic ways as well.

New PS3 Firmware Contains Backdoor

Vectormatic noted the rumor floating around that the most recent PS3 patch has a backdoor, and “Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do, such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates.”

FreeBSD Running On PS3

An anonymous reader writes “One week after Sony’s PlayStation 3 private cryptography key was obtained, FreeBSD is up and running on the PS3. Nathan Whitehorn writes: ‘Yesterday, I imported support for the Sony Playstation 3 into our 64-bit PowerPC port, expanding our game console support into the current generation. There are still a few rough edges due to missing hardware support, but the machine boots and runs FreeBSD stably. These rough edges should be smoothed out in time for the 9.0 release.’” Update: 01/10 15:04 GMT by KD : As several commenters have pointed out, the submission was misleading in that BSD runs in OtherOS, making no use of the cracked keys.

First PlayStation 3 Custom Firmware Created

Stoobalou writes “Hot on the heels of the discovery of the the PlayStation 3 private root key, and its subsequent leakage by iPhone hacker Geohot, the first custom firmware for the formerly impenetrable console has been released. A code wrangler known only as Kakaroto reckons he has created the world’s first custom firmware for the popular console — although if you’re expecting it to help you play pirated games, you might be a little disappointed.”
