Xbox 720 Might Reject Used Games

silentbrad writes “Online passes are a recent staple in staving off used sales. Limiting what used buyers can access is a protective measure for publishers, much to the chagrin of parts of the gaming community. Chris Kohler of Wired argues that the death of used games is inevitable, and passes are the first step toward something exactly like a native anti-used game something integrated into consoles. He notes, of course, that digital is the future of buying games, but in the meantime we may be looking at ‘an interim period in which the disc as a delivery method is still around but … becomes more like a PC game, which are sold with one-time-use keys that grant one owner a license to play the game on his machine.’ Also at Kotaku, the source for the Wired article (which is the source for the IGN article).”

Microsoft To Offer Flight For Free This Spring

hypnosec writes “Microsoft’s Flight Simulator series, which was in dormant state until now, will see a re-launch this spring and that too for free. The name of this series will be simply Flight, and players will have free access to the digital sky with this simulator. In other words, it will be available as a free download; however, the user would need to buy additional content to enhance their experience. The content that can be purchased includes aircraft as well as new environments. Microsoft states that the most amazing part of this game is the user can experience some real life locations like Big Island of Hawaii along with ‘region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks.’” [Video demo here.] I’d like to know where the ESRB finds “crude humor” or “mild violence” in there.

What Microsoft Should and Shouldn’t Do For the Xbox 720

donniebaseball23 writes “Xbox 360 just came off a record November, with more than 1.7 million units sold in the U.S., but behind closed doors Microsoft is planning its next move for the successor to the popular console. Plenty of Xbox 720 rumors have surfaced in recent months, but veteran games journalist Chris Morris has filtered through them to provide a realistic take on what Microsoft should and shouldn’t do with Xbox 360’s successor. In particular, he notes that Microsoft should adopt the Blu-ray format from Sony. ‘A DVD drive as a medium for storing larger and larger games is outdated – and it steps on the toes of a system that bills itself as the high definition leader,’ Morris writes. ‘Microsoft resisted the move to Blu-ray this generation without any ill effects. It even survived picking the losing side in the format battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but it can’t rely on the DVD to take it into the next generation.’”

Sony Attacks Microsoft’s Publishing Policies

winston18 writes “Sony’s vice president of publisher relations has gone on record as saying that Microsoft is protecting an inferior technology with their policies regarding content on Xbox Live Arcade and multiplatform titles. The comments stem from Microsoft’s admission that they reserve the right to deny titles on Xbox Live if they launch on the PlayStation Network first.”

Microsoft Launches Avatar Kinect

mikejuk writes “Is Avatar Kinect a world-changing innovation or is it just silly? The idea is simple enough. It uses Kinect to determine body position and facial expression and maps these in real-time onto an avatar displayed on the screen along with other similar avatars. The big question is: what is it good for? The simple answer is that you can hide behind your avatar. It is an opportunity for anyone who feels less than confident about their appearance to become a performer — Microsoft is running a stand-up-comedian-via-avatar competition, for example. The internet has long provided an anonymous platform where users can express themselves, and Avatar Kinect extends this to facial and body expressions. Perhaps this is how video phone calls finally catch on — I’ll get my avatar to phone you.”
