

An anonymous reader writes “The Pentagon plans to fork over $32 million to develop ‘fun to play’ computer games that can refine the way weapons systems are tested to ensure they are free from software errors and security bugs, according to a Defense Department solicitation. The goal is to create puzzles that are “intuitively understandable by ordinary people” and could be solved on laptops, smartphones, tablets and consoles. The games’ solutions will be collected into a database and used to improve methods for analyzing software, according to the draft request for proposals put out by the military’s venture capital and research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.”

The Air Force’s Research Lab in Rome, NY. has one of the cheapest supercomputers ever made, and best of all over 3,000 of your friends can play Tekken on it. The computer is made from 1,716 PlayStation 3s linked together, and is used to process images from spy planes. From the article: “The Air Force calls the souped-up PlayStations the Condor Supercomputer and says it is among the 40 fastest computers in the world. The Condor went online late last year, and it will likely change the way the Air Force and the Air National Guard watch things on the ground.” We covered this story back in December when the Condor first went online.

Last month we discussed news that upcoming shooter Medal of Honor would allow players to take the role of Taliban forces in multiplayer games, causing no small amount of consternation among political groups and military supporters. Now, Electronic Arts and developer Danger Close have bowed to pressure and announced that the Taliban side would simply be referred to as “opposing force.” Quoting executive producer Greg Goodrich:
“The majority of this feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. For this, the Medal of Honor team is deeply appreciative. However, we have also received feedback from friends and families of fallen soldiers who have expressed concern over the inclusion of the Taliban in the multiplayer portion of our game. This is a very important voice to the Medal of Honor team. This is a voice that has earned the right to be listened to. It is a voice that we care deeply about. … While this change should not directly affect gamers, as it does not fundamentally alter the gameplay, we are making this change for the men and women serving in the military and for the families of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice — this franchise will never willfully disrespect, intentionally or otherwise, your memory and service.”

donniebaseball23 writes “EA’s Medal of Honor reboot doesn’t ship until October 12, but it’s already seen a fair amount of controversy thanks to the publisher’s decision to allow people to play as Taliban in multiplayer. The controversy just got escalated another notch, reports IndustryGamers, as the world’s biggest games retailer GameStop has decided it won’t sell the title at its stores located on US military bases. The new Medal of Honor won’t be advertised at these stores either. GameStop noted that they came to this decision ‘out of respect for our past and present men and women in uniform.’”

One soldier states that games like MoH and Call of Duty are ‘profiteering from war.’ Another says, ‘Honestly, I don’t really see what the whole fuss is about. It’s a game, and just like in Call of Duty, you don’t really care about what side you’re taking, just as long as you win. I don’t think anyone cares if you’re part of the Rangers or Spetznaz, as long as you win.’ An excellent and interesting read.”

Many veterans and current military personnel now take an active role in the video game community. Are game companies running the risk of walking into a public relations disaster when making games about current wars? More importantly, how will veterans react to playing games about a conflict in which they have participated? From the article: ‘To portray conflict in a way that not only accurately depicts the acts of war, but does so in a manner that takes into account the sacrifices of soldiers within some sort of moral framing is a complicated matter. Now add to this the idea that such depictions are essentially created as entertainment and to make money. It is certainly mind numbing when looked at from a social perspective. … Now try and apply this dynamic to a more recent conflict such as the Vietnam War or the current conflicts in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Considering that the latter wars are still in progress, the ability for a game developer to accurately gauge the morality of such a conflict is limited at best. To make a game that takes these factors into account while trying to create something that is both entertaining and capable of mass appeal among the gaming community is near impossible.’”

almehdaaol writes “New military recruits are coming in physically heavier and out of shape, so the US Navy has decided to take an interesting course of action by creating a new training regimen inspired by the fitness-centric Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution.”
This comes alongside a report confirming some of the BS we told our parents when we were growing up: “Bavelier said playing the kill-or-be-killed games can improve peripheral vision and the ability to see objects at dusk, and the games can even be used to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye, a disorder characterized by indistinct vision in one eye. She said she believes the games can improve math performance and other brain tasks.”

An anonymous reader writes “The CEO of Unity discusses ‘gamification’ — applying game design and technology to real-world applications beyond ‘gamespace.’ The military is using game design theory for some training programs — not just ‘the 3-D, realistic, virtual world experiences, but also the built-in use of frustration and reward.’ (And similar training packages were adopted by Unilever, the giant corporation which owns Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.) Medical professionals have licensed a ‘Google Earth for the human body,’ and game design is also being used to build tax software. (’It has to be the most boring field, but I mean that’s the point. You can make it slightly challenging and give people little reasons to play these tax tools — beyond, you know, not going to prison!’) While some companies conduct team-building exercises using Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, others use game technology to standardize their in-house employee training programs. The interviewer adds, ‘I know I’d feel better about job training if it felt more like killing zombies.’”
