Variety reports that Ubisoft, the game studio behind Assassin’s Creed, the Tom Clancy games and the recent Prince of Persia titles, has launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures for the purpose of turning its game franchises into TV and movie franchises.
“Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was brought to the bigscreen by Jerry Bruckheimer, with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead. The 2010 pic grossed about $335 million worldwide. The publisher started expanding its reach in 2007, when it launched Ubisoft Digital Arts, a computer animation studio, which created Avatar’s ground-breaking 3D vidgame. A year later, it acquired Montreal-based visual effects house Hybride Technologies.”

Hugh Pickens writes “Jamie Madigan writes in GamePro that psychologists and experts on fear are trying to understand why so many gamers enjoy being terrified by horror-themed video games and movies. Researchers say some people are sensation-seekers attracted to any emotional high, be it from sky diving, shark-punching or horror films. Other personalities are drawn to situations showing the disruption of social norms in ways that will probably never happen in real life. But a more encompassing explanation of horror’s inherent appeal is how it helps us master our fears. ‘Watching a horror film gives us back some control,’ says Dr. Andrew Weaver. ‘We can experience an adverse event through film, and we know that it will end. We’ll survive it. We’ll go on with our lives.’ Interestingly, horror only seems to work if the player or viewer knows that what they see is fake. In one famous experiment, researchers had subjects watch a movie featuring authentic scenes of live monkeys having their brains scooped out and of children — I kid you not — having their facial skin peeled away in preparation for surgery. ‘The vast majority of the study’s participants refused to finish watching the films despite that more grotesque movies playing at the theater down the street could outdo those scenes,’ writes Madigan. ‘We seem to need to know it’s fake.’”

Back in 2008, it was announced that BioShock would be getting a movie adaptation. Those plans never really materialized, and director Gore Verbinski has now explained why:
“I couldn’t really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating. Alternately, I wasn’t really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you’re still shivering and going, ‘Jesus Christ!’ It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the price tag is high. We just didn’t have any takers on an R-rated movie with that price tag.”

Tolkien or J.K.Rowling, arguably still following the principles that led to the appalling Super Mario Bros. movie in 1992: ‘A game lacks the complexity that a movie requires.’ Yet a modern gaming masterpiece such as Mass Effect has the depth and breadth to deserve better treatment in the proposed trilogy. Is Hollywood again going to disrespect fans who, in this case, have as much right to see a good plot respected as the readers of Lord Of The Rings? This article discusses why and how Hollywood should grow up regarding these adaptations.”

tkdog writes “Netflix has added Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii to the list of devices that can stream their catalog’s content without the need for a disc. On the Netflix blog, VP Greg Peters adds, ‘In addition to removing the need for discs, we’ve developed a new user interface on both applications that significantly improves the experience. The new applications will allow you to search for content directly from the device and you’ll also be able to view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles or alternate audio tracks.’”

An anonymous reader writes with news that Sony is planning a firmware update for the PS3 to enable 3-D playback from Blu-ray movies and YouTube. The update is scheduled for September, and support for 3-D photos will come later. Sony’s Kaz Hirai spoke recently about how the PS3 was designed with these kinds of upgrades in mind. “Given how fast technology turns over now, we knew going in that we had to pack a lot of horsepower into the PS3. Four years ago — when you look at the console’s power and its retail price — a lot of people were critical with the fact that there was so much packed under the hood. Now we’re especially pleased to be introducing things like Move and 3-D gaming because we’re able to show tangibly why we released the PS3 with the power it has, and why it makes so much sense to future proof a console.” Sony also updated its PS3 Terms of Service to warn against too much 3-D viewing.

An article at CNN discusses why big screen interpretations of video games, even successful ones, often fail to succeed at the box office. Quoting:
“The problem with successfully adapting video games into hit Hollywood spin-offs may lie in the way in which stories for both mediums are designed and implemented. Game makers chasing the dream of playing George Lucas or Steven Spielberg will always strive to coax human emotion and convincing drama from increasingly photorealistic virtual elements. The Hollywood machine, in its endless chase for big bucks, can’t help but exploit the latest hit interactive outing, often failing to realize it’s often a specific gameplay mechanic, psychological meme or technical feature that makes the title so compelling. Both sides may very well continue to look down in disdain on the work that the opposite is doing, which can doom any collaborative efforts. But where the two roads truly diverge is in the way stories are fundamentally told. Films offer a single, linear tale that’s open to individual interpretation, whereas games are meant to be experienced differently and in a multitude of ways by every player.”

The franchise has been acquired by Legendary Pictures, which is best known for its co-productions of The Dark Knight, Clash of the Titans, 300, Watchmen, and, um, The Hangover, as part of a co-financing agreement with Warner Bros.”

Grant,thompson writes “As announced in January and mentioned here on Slashdot, Netflix is sending out discs today to enable streaming on the Nintendo Wii. ‘Netflix has sent out emails to customers who pre-ordered the Wii’s instant streaming disc, indicating that the disc will arrive in mailboxes tomorrow, and that the service will likely start within the next day.’”
